Show The Gerernment After the Railroads. Rail-roads. New Yobk, February 10. Secretary Lamar .began this morning the hearing on the proposition to demand of the subsidized Pacific railroads the amount of the subsidy paid by them for years to the Pacific Mail Company, which the Department claims is due the Government under the Thurman Act,and Ex-Congressmen Eppa, Hunter and Ex-Assistant Attorney-General McCammard appeared for the Central Pacific, and Jere Wilson for the Union Pacific. Assistant Secretary Jenks read a statement showing that about 3,500,000 had thus been paid, of whioh the Government claimed it was entitled en-titled to 25 per cent. He said the subsidy payment had been included in the accounts of the roads as part of the operating expenses, ex-penses, which the Kailroad Bureau thought improper, and the proposition is to demand i of the roads one-quarter of all that has been 1 paid, and one-half of all hereafter paid, the subsidy being $85,000 a month. The railroad rail-road attorneys said they had telegraphed to their principals asking for a statement; of the facts, and asked for delay. Secretary Lamar then ordered that the matter be held over until Nebruary 26th, when it will be j taken up. - |
