Show Proposed monument to ISancock. Washington, February 10. In the Senate to-day Mr. Hoar offered the following resolution, reso-lution, for which he asked immediate consideration: con-sideration: liesolved, That the Committee on Library consider the report at an early day of the expediency of the erection at the seat of government of a statue or monument to the late illustrious General Winfield Soott Han- In offering the resolution Mr. Hoar said that when th9 announcement was made yesterday yes-terday of the great public calamity that had occurred in the death of the illustrious soldier, sol-dier, the Senate very properly followed all precedents in like cases, and what Mr. Hoar was sure would be in accordance with the desire of the distinguished deceased, that is to say, the Senate proceeded with the public business. But it was proper that proceedings proceed-ings should at once be initiated for paying a tribute to the memory of the deceased. |
