Show SCANDAL-MONGERS AT WORK. Certain disappointed and belly-aching politicians of Washington and New York" whose minds and tongues seem to be principally occupied in originating and disseminating slanderous gossip about President Cleveland and members of his Cabinet, have seen fit4.to connect the name of Secretary Whitney, of the Navy Department, with certain alleged ques- I tionable proceedings by which a syndi- j cate of capitalists recently obtained con-1 trol of the New York Broad wav strnpt ! railroad and other other profitable franchises. fran-chises. This story, as telegraphed over the country on Saturday last, makes out that Secretary Whitney's name has been published pub-lished as a member of the aforesaid syndicate syn-dicate which, under different titles, has been working to secure control of the Broadway Street and other street railroad rail-road franchises in New York City, and it has been asserted that the syndicate furnished fur-nished the money which one Jacob Sharp and his associates are alleged to have used in buying through the Board of Aldermen Al-dermen the valuable franchise of tin's and other roads. "Should it now transpire," trans-pire," add the character assassins, "that the Secretary of the Navy is involved in i 7T a scandal which bids fair to double discount dis-count that with which the name of the Attorney-General is identified, it would be most disastrous to the Administration." Adminis-tration." Fortunately for Secretary Whitney's reputation, the New York Legislature, now in session, has undertaken- to thoroughly thor-oughly investigate the matter, and the public will not long be left in doubt as to the malicious intent of those from whom the infamous story emanated. In this connection we quote the following follow-ing from the New York Sun, which journal jour-nal may be taken as an authority as to the wishes of Secretary Whitney in the premises: "If anybody supposes that I William C. Whitney is not in entire sympathy sym-pathy with the investigation into the Broadway railroad franchise, he is woefully woe-fully mistaken. We happen to know that Mr. Whitney shares the wish of all good citizens that the wrongdoers in this matter shall be brought to justice." |
