Show "iialtKie" by the American Opera Company. New Yobk, March 2. "Lakme" was presented pre-sented to-night for the first time in Amerioa. It is a grand opera by Delibes, and was put on the stage by the management of the American Opera Company last evening in excellent style. The soene is laid iu India, and the splendor, gorgeousness and wealth of color of the East were produced by scenic effects and costuming in a way to make a panorama df chastely, sensuous beauty. The tenor Condidus A. Grald, a British officer, who falls in love with Lakme, was in excellent excel-lent voice, and sang admirably. Paulinu L. Allmand was in make-up and acting an ideal Lakme, while her singing brought out repeated plaudits. The performance was for the benefit of the home for the relief of the destitute blind. The Academy was crowded with an audience more cultured and appreciative appre-ciative than merely fashionable. |
