Show THE FEE SEASON. The iSTir"of lastrught says that the fee season has begun again. This remark is called forth because an sarrest for unlawful unlaw-ful cohabitation was made yesterday, and means that the enforcement of the law is going on. No doubt the payment of any ! public officer by the fee Bystem is bad, but none the less the law should : be enforced, en-forced, fees or no fees. .That there are more cases of unlawful cohabitation than any other class is true';"and no doubt it is also true there are plenty of cases of lewd cohabitation, and these cases also ought to be punished. If unlawful cohabi-" tation as used in the Edmunds law is destructive of the : family as founded in all Christian countries, so also is lewd cohabitation destructive of the sanctity of the family, and when the family is destroyed the State is imperiled. The Edmunds law . was enacted for a special purpose, the suppression of polygamy, polyg-amy, and did not assume to deal with any other question. We have been informed in-formed on very good authority that Senator Edmunds would not believe there were not laws in Utah on such matters as adultery, lewd cohabitation, etc., and hence did not intend to include any 6uch legislatian in his bill. These laws do not exist in Utah, but they should, and it is to be hoped that- the Legislature which meets this winter win-ter will enact all. needed legislation legis-lation upon these subjects. The blame for this condition cf things must rest upon the local Legislature and not upon Congress, for the Legislature has the power to enact any and all laws necessary. If any such laws shall be enacted, en-acted, we trust that the compensation to the Prosecuting Attorney, whether he be, the United States Attorney or the County Attorney, whose duty it shall be to' prosecute prose-cute violations of such laws, will not be in fees but in a set salary. : - - ' |
