The last number of Leslie's Illustrated Xaig contains an excellent portrait of Mr. Hugh C. Wallace, recently appointed Receiver of Public Moneys for Utah. Mr. Wallace is the youngest of President Cleveland's appointees, und, it is Baid, the youngest person who ever held a Federal commission. Mr. Wallace is a Mipsourian by birth, and had hardly reached his majority when appointed. The Xc ws says : "He ia a remarkable illustration of what indomitable pluck, untiring energy and ceaseless perseverance persever-ance can accomplish in the Far West. Leaving his native heath when sixteen vears of age, he went to New Mexico a frinnrllaca hoatvllaaa arrl iminlniia lad. He launched into the real estate and brokerage business and made a success suc-cess from the beginning. He began writing for the press about this time, and developed a striking ability, for one so young, in handling Western politics and affairs. The youth made money rapidly, and finding the field of New Mexico too limited for his speculations with success he had advanced from agent to principal he sought the Northwest, making Salt Lake his headquarters. He has lived in most of the Territories in the Northwest, and has acquired a large property by his shrewdness." |
