Show ABBAM CAJfNOX He Wakes a Fanatical tittle Speech to the Court. Before proceeding to take up the case of the United State3 vs. George Q. Cannon Can-non in court this morning, it was announced an-nounced by-Mr. Dickson that to-day had been appointed for imposing sentence ,6n Abram H. Cannon, found guilty of un-y lawful cohabitation. " The Judge inquired if Mr. Cannon were present, and ascertaining ascer-taining that he was, requested hira to step forward. The yonng man, who ia finely-built, nice-looking and very genef- ally admired among his acquaintances, took the position assigned him without a quiver. The Judge asked the usual questions, and Mr- Cannon asked if he might be permitted to define his position, to which His Honor gave consent, stipulating the condition that his remarks would nave 10 be brief. Mr. Cannon said: I have always respected re-spected the laws of my country and have been raised and taught by my parents that the Constitution was an inspired instrument. in-strument. In this one respect alone that of unlawful cohabitation have I violated the laws of my country, and this was done with the consciousness that I was observing a law which I regard as being above and beyond be-yond that of the nation. I determined at the time I made those covenants that I would, if necessary, suffer persecution, imprisonmerit, and," if needs be, death, rather than relinquish them, and I have not changed my mind in this respect.- I am ready to receive sentence, Your Honor. The Court delivered a very pertinent address to the gentlemen, containing tlie argument that, if such a position be admitted ad-mitted as the one on which it is sought to protect polygamy, murder or any other crime could be adopted as a tenet of a man's religion, and the law would be powerless to regulate and suppress wickedness. wick-edness. Mr. Cannon received the full sentence ! of the court, and remained in the Marshal's Mar-shal's oflice till a late hour this afternoon, when hevas taken out to the Pen. |
