Show Cancer info, that's lifesaving am a 37 year old woman and in very good health. Do I really need to be doing breast self-examination and have a mammogram? Remember, one out of every ten American women will develop breast cancer sometime during her life. The best weapon against breast cancer is early detection; and the key to early detection is discovering the lumps that indicate cancer as soon as possible. You can follow the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Can-cer Society's Screening Guidelines: -Every woman over 20 should perform a monthly breast self-exam. -Women between 20 and 40 should have a physical breast exam by a health professional every three years. Women over 40 should have such an exam every year. -Women age 35 to 39 should have a baseline screening mammogram to be used as a comparison com-parison later in their lives. Women age 40 to 49 should have a screening mammogram every one to two years. Those over 60 should have a mammogram every year. -Women at high-risk (particularly those who have a female blood relative, such as their mother, sister, maternal aunt, or grandmother, who has had breast cancer) should work with their health care provider to establish an appropriate screening schedule. A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray that helps your doctor "see" breast cancer before there is a lump, when the cure rates are 90 to 100 percent. per-cent. These steps could save your life and your breast.
