Show THE DEMOCRAT recently said that there were gentlemen in Chicago who would give Miss Rose Elizabeth Cleveland a fair field in which to test her capacity as an editress and not permit her name to be bandied about by the ruthless para grapher and we submit herewith proof that one of the gentlemen mentioned is already up in arms for the fair Roses cause Gene Field in the Chicago News has the following The Boston Herald goes to the trouble of explaining that Mr John Boyle OKeillys peppery letter to Mr A P T Elder was aimed rather at the publishers than at the editor of Literary Life This explanation is wholly uncalled for in her effort to raise Literary Life above the plane of mediocrity Miss Cleveland has the sympathy of every body and there is not we presume to say a reputable writer in the land who would say an unkind word to Miss Cleveland of her work Miss Cleveland is as she says in one of her recent essays new at the business of editing and we are sure that writers as wel l as readers will accord her the temporary forbearance she craves We are confident that when Miss Cleveland has been somewhat some-what longer in harness she will relieve her publisher of the task of writing appeals for literary charity We regret very deeply that Mr Elders silly letters have put his able and amiable editor to such a disadvantage before the literateurs of the country we look upon it as a grave injustice to Miss Cleve land |
