Show WHO MURDERED THE CHILD I Two Women Arrested for the Guilt of the Garden Infanticide Mrs Rife the woman suspected on strong indicia of being the unnatural murderous mother of the child found in Ogden river is about thirtyfive years of age well dressed evidently belonging to a well fixed family She has been in Ogden for about six weeks or so her husband hus-band a wealthy stock man remaining in Wyoming If she it > vas who committed the heinous crime on her offspring it is surmised that she came to Ogden to conceal con-ceal the result of an illicit connection unknown un-known to her husband At any rate when she was taken to the jail andthere interrogated and confronted with strong circumstantial evidence as to her guilt she cried out My God my God Afterwards she exclaimed Ill nevermore never-more sleep until my last sleep And when she had given permission to telegraph tele-graph for her husband she is reported as having used the desperate expression Ill be murdered if he comes Mr Rife was expected in this evening from the East Lizzie Fitzgerald who is said to he ill a delicate condition was afterwards arrested ar-rested as being an important witness if no worse She manifested great con > sternation and deep anguish Whether it was tho revulsion of wrongly accused innocence or the conscious pang of guilt was not then discernible At any rate she appeared greatly agitated Shortly after 2 oclock yesterday Jennie Rife and Lizzie Fitzgerald appeared before Justice Thomas n Dee to hear read the charge against them and to have the legal 1 extent and jurisdiction of the proceedings in the justices court explained to them all of which painful duty the justice dis charged in a dignified and humane man ° ner The charge was that of the murder of the infant found last week ill Ogden river the particulars of which have appeared ap-peared Mrs Rife proposed to enter a plea of Not guilty Prosecuting Attorney Richards however suggested l the propriety pro-priety of giving the defendants till the day after tomorrow to enter their pleas Mr Richards very properly and hu I inanely insisted on the continuance Mrs Fitzgerald seemed to be very eager to give her evidence there and then protesting pro-testing her innocence of any connection with the crime alleged The Court then continued the case till 10 am Thursday bv which time the first defendants lius band will bo here and able to become cognizant of the perilous and precarious situation of his wife Ogden Zcus |
