Show THE SEALERS DOOM Death Finally Closes The Long Series of Captain Jack mans Disasters A Postal Clerk Caught After a Long And Successful Career of Crime The Lease of The Oregon Railway and Navigation CompanyDoings at The Peoples Capital Washington Wirings WASHINGTON April 1A revised estimate of the public debt reduction for March makes it about ell OOOOO It is authoritatively announced that the following appointments will be made to dat Secretary of the Treasure Charles F Fairchild of New York Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Isaac H Maynard of New York Mr Maynard is the present Second Comptroller Comp-troller of the Treasury having been appointed ap-pointed to that position by President Cleveland Cleve-land on June 11885 He has made an excellent ex-cellent record in that position At the time of his appointment Judge Maynard was First Deputy AttorneyGeneral l of New York Two years prior to his appointment to the Federal service he was the Democratic Demo-cratic candidate for Secretary of State of New York but was defeated owing it is said to his prohibition record His home is in Delphi New York Commissioner Sparks yesterday issued an order creating a Contest Board to which all contest oases now pending or hereafter arising in preemption and public lands decisions de-cisions shall be referred for examination and decision After action is taken by this board upon a contest case it will go to the Board of Review The board is to consist of five members selected from the several divisions of the General Land Office Secretary Whitney has approved the report re-port of the board appointed to select sites for two new dry docks authorized by the last Congress The docks will be located at the New York and Norfolk navy yards and will be built by contract on the general plan of the Simpson dry docks THE INTER STATE COMMISSION About 11 oclock yesterday morning Messrs Cooley Morrison Schoonmaker and Walker four members of the InterState Commerce Commission called at the White House and paid their respects to the President Presi-dent Commissioner Bragg did not arrive in the city in time to go with them but jailed at the White House shortly afterward and then joined his associates at Willards Hotel where an informal gathering took place to enable the members to become better acquainted with one another At 3 oclock the Commissioners met by agreement agree-ment at the Interior Department where their commissions were handed to them and the prescribed oaths of office administered On motion of Colonel Morrison Judge Cooley was selected chairman of the Commission Com-mission This action was unanimous and was taken without discussion the members having all come to the conclusion that Judge Cooley was best fitted for the position posi-tion The Commission then proceed to the temporary quarters selected for them in the Hooe building on F street just below the Ebbitt House and after an inspection of the rooms parted with the understanding that another meeting should be held today for consultation No candidates for the secretaryship of the Commission were proposed pro-posed and that matter is still in abeyance Prior to the selection of Judge Cooley as chairman of the Commission Messrs Mor rison Bragg and Sohoonmaker the three Democratic members had s conference at which it was decided that in view of Judge Cooleys long experience and eminence as a judge and in order to demonstrate to the country that it was their object to promote harmony and unanimity in its board Col Morrison should propose and Mr Bragg second Judge Cooleys nomination as chairman chair-man The first business that will come before the board after its organization will be fixing fix-ing the time and place for hearing question I to be submitted by M P Smith vicepresi dent of the Louisville Nashville railway and Virgil Power general commissioner of pool rates for the Southern Railway k S Steamship company These questions relate re-late to the long and short haul provision of the InterState Commerce law as it applies to railroads of the Mississippi River south of the Ohio and west of the Potomac Secretary Endicott has issued a circular calling for information relative to the condition con-dition of business in the War Department the business methods of the bureaus another an-other matters required by Senator Cockrells committee I A telegram received yesterday from Hot Springs Arkansas announces the sudden i death of Judge Francis P Cuppy at that place last night |
