Show HEAVY WASHOUTS I Devastation Along the I > fc It G Track Near Grassy Trail Yesterdays DEMOCRAT contained the mere mention of the fact that a washout had occurred on the D R G track I somewhere south of this city but the I lateness of the hour when the news was I received and a lack of space prevented I any extended account of the occurrence i at that time I At last accounts the damage appears I to be much more heavy than at first I represented the track for a distance of I five miles being almost a total wreck The scene of the disaster is at Grassy Trail about 900 miles from this city The I rain started falling heavily during the early part of the week and culminated on Wednesday in a cloudburst which swept everyhting before it The creek I known as Grassy Trail is crossed several times by the road and at each of these places it was spanned by a truss bridge The soil being very light it was quite natural that when the flood came the sand should go with it The grade of the road has been fearfully cut up and the repairing will amount to rebuilding Seven bridges were carried from their positions and some of them taken a considerable con-siderable distance down the stream In some places only the grade is gone and the track still remains but in others the rails and ties have been carried clear away from the line of the road Wednesday Wednes-day mornings eastbound train was stopped at P V Junction and yesterday returned to this city and sent its passengers passen-gers over the U P All through passengers passen-gers coming from the West yesterday went over the old road and todays passengers will be obliged to do likewise An immense force of graders track layers bridge builders and engineers are at work on the wreck Night and day shitts are working for all they are worth and with good luck it expected that the road will be in perfect condition in time for Sundays trains The devastation is by far the greatest that has ever occurred along the line and it is to be hoped that it will not soon repeat itself |
