Show MR CAKSIDY COMPLIMENTED Yesterday mornings Mormon sheet in a tirade of vulgar abuse directed at lion Geo W Cassidy of Nevada involuntarily in-voluntarily pays that gentleman a handsome hand-some compliment It plumes itself upon having materially assisted in accomplishing accomplish-ing his defeat for Congress two years ago and exultingly predicts a similar result this fall It admits its preference for the Republican nominee who was elected over Mr Cassidy and who is certain to he his opponent again this year This notwithstanding the fact that Mr Wood burn introduced a bill in Congress embodying em-bodying most of the provisions of the I Tucker bill as it was reported from the committee and during the entire session persistently urged with what ability he possessed the most stringent legislation against the polygamous polyga-mous and treasonable institution which controls the local government of this Territory Mr Cassidy while in Congress Con-gress most vigorously advocated the i passage of the Edmunds bill making a speech in its favor which was recognized by both the friends and opponents of the measure as the most logical convincing and effective that was delivered in either house upon the subject Of course this is the Mormon grievance which inspires that element and its lesser organ in their hatred of Mr Cassidy The latters Republican successor suc-cessor was the author or at least the introducer in-troducer of a far more radical and restrictive re-strictive bill relating to Utah matters was as pronounced and more bitter against Mormonism in all of its phases than his Democratic predecessor and yet ho is more acceptable to the polygamists I of Utah than the gentleman who simply advocated an Act which was mild and moderate compared with the legislation proposed by Mr Woodburn at the lust session The Mormon preference for the t Republican candidate is Msily accounted for Of the two evils hey I choose the least Recognizing the superior ability of Mr Cassidy they prefer pre-fer the man whom they consider the least capable of furthering legislation objectionable objec-tionable to them hence their preference for his equally antiMormon opponent A higher compliment although unintentional unin-tentional and vulgarly and abusively tendered could not have been conveyed from such a source as the lesser journalistic journal-istic light of the Mormon Church in this city Four years ago Mr Cassidy was elected by a majority larger than that of 1 any candidate upon either ticket despite the Mormon vote of the State which was cast solidly against him by order of the President of the Mormon Church His defeat two years ago was attributable to the Blaine boom on the Pacific Coast and certain local causes which do not exist at the present time As it was ho ran far ahead of his associates on the State ticket and would have been elected hut for the overpowering strength of the Presidential candidate of the opposition party He will be nominated by the convention at Elko on the 9th instant and will resume his seat in Congress at the session succeeding the next The people of Nevada appreciate his industry ability and faithfulness to their interests and never more than since they foolishly neglected to further avail themselves of his services two years ago Mormon abuse is water on his wheel for the animus ani-mus is plainly discernible and will act asa as-a stimulant to loyal Nevadans to more vigorously support the man whose well directed ability has incurred the enmity of an element whose friendship could only be secured by the most servile pandering pan-dering to an institution founded upon lechery and treason j whose existence is a libel upon our Republican form of government and which can only be prolonged pro-longed by the treachery ignorance ignor-ance or cowardly fears of such Congressional Con-gressional representatives as on the list of which will never be found the name of George W Cassidy |
