Show 1I 1 I CURSED EVICTION I I Todays dispatches cite the imprisoning imprison-ing of a Catholic priest in Iieland for alleged I al-leged threats against the owner of an cst cs-t tate from which one of his the priests I I parishoners was evicted The act seems to show how determined are the heartless less landlords of that unhappy land to coerce the poor people into acts of violence vio-lence that they may be surrounded by police and soldiers and be the better able to enforce their heartless demands on poor families who have not the wherewith to buy bread let alone pay rent In this land of plenty for the man who will earn it it seems hard that these poor people whose only crime is hereditary poverty should be ruthlessly ruth-lessly driven out into the bogs like cattle end left to starve or perish from exposure because their little plots of land did not bring forth sufficient crops to pay for the holding The pen refuses to argue the question with coolness and is tempted to write words of burning shame upon the names of the miscreants who boast of the freedom of their country in the face of such inhumanities That this class of outrages can continue in a land claiming to be Christian and giving untold un-told wealth to puppets who ape religion for these earthly benefits causes the average man to look upon Christianity with doubt and seek some other means of knowing Gods power on earth If the people of the earth were passed through a postern gate no specimen speci-men be he ever so mean and despicable could turn the bar but would be a king to the sleuth hounds who enact such unholy things against Gods poor There must be in the near future some adequate ade-quate reprisal for such hideous wrongs and when it does come it will be sweeping sweep-ing and the earth will be the better for having these tyrannical scoundrels removed re-moved from off its surface |
