editorial says The victory Indeed is bigger than had even been anticipated antici-pated Bodwell Republican candidate for Governor will have a plurality of from 2000 to 13000 four Republican Congressmen Congress-men have been reelected and the Legislature Legis-lature is largely Republican thus ensuring the election of a Republican Senator All the counties are Republican with two possible pos-sible exceptions The Prohibition vote will probably not exceed 3500 and while the total Republican vote is smaller than in 1884 the party has increased its pluralities in many parts of the State This is a result despite the united efforts of the Demoorats the third party of Prohibitionists and the selfstyled leaders of the Workingmen The Times says Elaine is going down hill rapidly Elaine is doing splendidly in his State He will read an account of his descent des-cent in the returns of the election held in Maine yesterday and we do not believe he will find much comfort in it The returns show that thirtytwo legal voters stayed away from the polls in each of the 150 towns of the State thus far heard from in which I the Democrats had no organization spent no money and made no effort This is more than discouraging for Elaine it is destruct I I iVA AUOUSTA Maine Sept 13 Chairman Manley has sent the following telegram to the editor of the New York Tribune The result of todays eleotion is a far larger Republican Re-publican majority than was anticipated the largest indeed given in the State for the past fifteen years except in the Presidential year We expect 7000 or 8000 plurality Figures at this hour 11 oclock indicate a plurality for Bodwoll of not less than 12030 and it is not improbable 14000 We have carried every Congressional district and elected twothirds to three fourths of the Legislature thus securing the United States Senator and county officers probably in fourteen of sixteen counties of the State The Republican plurality in this city is the largest ever known being more than 700 out of a total vote of 1800 The total vote of the State will be above 137OtJ which is extraordinarily ex-traordinarily large for an off year Out of these I figure that the third narty vote will not exceed 350J far less than was expected by the leaders of the movement POBXLAND Maine Sept 13fwo hundred und twentythree towns give Bodwell Republican Re-publican 48633 Republican plurality this year in those towns is 9592 against U03J in 1834 being a loss of 4468 I A similar loss in towns yet to be heard from will give an aggregate I vote of 127000 divided as follows liepuoli j can 6SJO Democrats 55200 Prohibition 330J The Lebor ticket had no gubernatorial gubernato-rial candidate nor Congressional candidate in the Fourth District But few figures the Congressional and Labor vote will probably be known until the official figures come in All four Republican Congressmen are elected by handsome majorities Reed in the First District is increasing his plurality plu-rality over Clifford to 1200 against 925 over Cleaves in 1884 The Legislature will stand probably twentyeight Republican I Senators to three Democrats against a complete Republican Senate in 1884 1 NEW YORK Sept 14rhe Sun says editorially edi-torially The Republicans carried Maine yesterday as was expected but returns how decided Republican losses in Maine due to the Prohibitionists inconsistency I General Neal Dows present with his former < Position in regard to the enforcement of Prohibition in j Maine and the vigorous speeches of Elaine undoubtedly kept down the vote of Prohibitionists jet it is surprisingly surprIs-ingly large for n separate prohibition party In the State that has been enjoying the blessings of prohibition for a generation I In i
