Show THE K OF T CONVENTION The near approach of the next national convention of the t Knights of Labor at Richmond Va next month and the possibility of great changes being made in the workings of the Order bring it again to the front for public consideration considera-tion By certain amendments to the constitution it is intended by the delegates dele-gates to abolish the district assembly system altogether and so order things that working control will be more centralized central-ized then it is now and thus reduce the chances of mischief to a minimum It cannot be denied that in the first formation forma-tion of the Order thousands of men gained admittance who were never born to lead in any public measure and who by reason of their seniority of date of admission ad-mission claim more power than the newcomers new-comers This class of men of whom Martin Irons was a specimen being under un-der no central control and being as all weak men aremore or less affected by u local feeling could steep the whole organization organ-ization in trouble before the central directorate direc-torate could be made aware of the trouble To avoid such a catastrophe it in i absolutely necessary that supreme control con-trol should rest in a central body and that no strike boycott or other disturbance disturb-ance should take place in the name of the Order unless sanctioned and directed by the central body As the DEMOCRAT has so oftened advocated these months of peace and quietness in the labor market should be turned to account in perfecting the details of efficient organization for any trouble that may come in the future r and as the general executive board cannot I can-not handle all matters dilligeutly enough to meet the wants of the Order in distant I localities a corps of competent and trustworthy s trust-worthy inspectors or travelling agents I should be formed whose duty it would I be to travel on the orders of the central power and return detailed statements of I what they found on whih judgment of I future action could be bas 1 by the executive I ex-ecutive board The great trouble to meet is the aptitude of men of insufficient mental power andequpoise to force themselves t them-selves forward and push themselves into prominent places for which they are l i totally unfitted and by their actions II bring discredit and trouble on the organization 1 m organ-ization Among the thousands who form the rank and file is an abundance of good material from which to fashion anA an-A executive element and they should be chosen for their mental acquirements without fear or favor and when given power to act be supported in what they do by the central body The idea that troubles can occur in one locality that differ from those in another and require j r different remedies should be abandoned J as all things of whatsoever nature or degree de-gree of magnitude must be passed on by the central board before a healthy work I ing of the organization can be acheived For the good of the toiling masses everywhere every-where it is devoutly hoped that the J turbulent element in the Order can beheld be-held in bounds or effectually expelled and that those who have the framing of the new constitution will remember that I they are working for all and not for anyone I any-one locality j r < |
