Show A WOMANS DEADLY WORK A Georgia Belle Shoots and Stills Her Midnight Visitor LOUISVILLE Ga May 18The superior court of Jefferson has a young woman before its bar who is accused of murder Miss Elvira Ivey was at one time quite a belIe but her indiscretion led to her exclusion exclu-sion from polite social circles She brought suit against Solomon Jones her betrayer to compel him to marry her This action was to be called in court on Monday On the Saturday morning preceding however the body of John McCauley a farmer of the neighborhood was found beneath the window win-dow of Miss Iveys room A bullet had pierced his temple and in his hand was clutched a bundle of bank bills amounting to lj500 The woman said in explanation of the presence of McCauleys body that he was a friend to Jones He had climbed up to her window and said that the object of his visit was to induce her to withdraw claim against Jones As a means to accomplish this McCauley protested his own love for her exhibited the roll of bills and urged her to fly to Texas with him As McCauley had a living wife and seven children Miss Ivey says she reminded him of his duty toward them With an oath the desperate man declared de-clared that he intended Miss Ivey should either consentto his desire or suffer death at the same time making a movement as if to enter the window Instantly the bullet from Miss Iveys pistol compelled him to release re-lease his holdfrom the window and he fell back dead To her father and brother who were brought to the spot by the pistols report she told the above story of the attempt upon her virtue and declared that the whole movement was a plot to save Jones in the approaching trial The discovery of a packageof letters however how-ever in the possession McCauley are not in accord with the womans statements These letters are in Miss Iveys handwriting cover over a year preceding the lulling and are contemporaneous with her intimacy with Jones She writes in the most endearing endear-ing manner to McCauley In one of these letter supposed to ho tho last though not dated assent is given to a proposition to elope to Texas and the night upon which the killing took place is designated as the firrto This taken in onnnpntion with the fact l S io ut that McCauley SS had turned his possessions I posses-sions into cash and had taken leave of his family for an extended business tripm ke the womans storya little doubtful Why then did Miss Ivey kill him instead of flying with him Her letters establish her intimacy with him That he was not on speaking terms with Jones owing to their well rivalry for the womans favors was known The only explanation which has been given is that perhaps McCauley was expected at the window that night that the noise of the couple in removing articles through the window awakened a third person per-son who seeing the man fired and killed him and that seeing the mischief done Miss Ivev assumed the crime as a shield for this third person Miss Ivey as she sits in the courtroom is an object of great interest being a woman of decided beauty |
