| Show Kicking Axtell Ont WASHINGTON May 18 Chief Justice Axtell of New Mexico is willing to resign but he asked the favor of being permitted to retain his place to July 1st The New Mexico men now here protested against this indulgence They claim that he ought not to have been allowed to hold his seat a day after the Democratic inauguration since he has covered cov-ered his ermine with corruption from skirt to collar He is the most offensive partisan parti-san in New Mexico and that is saying a good deal says Colonel Anthony Joseph the Territorial Delegate Although holding hold-ing the highest and most sacred trust in the Territory he has violated every rule of right and decency He was Governor some years ago but acted so badly that President Grant removed him He incited our people to insurrection in-surrection and internecine strife and published pub-lished a proclamation advising assassination assassina-tion The residents of the Territory thought they were rid of Axtell when President Presi-dent Grant removed him but Hayes restored re-stored him |
