| Show NO CHURCH INTERFERENCE I It is 11 wellknown fact that in the politics k poli-tics of the Peoples party tuere is no 4 church interference This may seem a 17 strange thing to state but it is true nevertheless The church does not interfere inter-fere it simply dictates If it interfered J i1 it would indicate that the people had i some say in political affairs which maybe 1 may-be possible but is not known to be so The tl ticket put in the field by the Peoples party t has again been successful as was to have been expected but there is one thing l connected with the ticket that is not I generally known though largely suspected i sus-pected The ticket of the Peoples party that was voted for Monday and which f was nominated in convention Saturday l July 20th 1885 was made up by the U leaders of the Mormon church a week before the convention of the Peoples t party met It is a strong assertion to make and it can be proven A member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles when told by a wellknown gentleman of 1 this city that he knew that the ticket was 1 1 I arranged by the leaders of the church said I will not deny it Now the gentleman did not make any surmises but he knew it and what is more he can prove it What further did 1 r this apostle say The gentleman who I was conversation with him said Such things are wrong and they justify the i i charges brought against the people herej 4 and so long as such things are done Ill i never vote the Peoples ticket in thee the-e 1irorld Tho apostle said 4f1 think as I 1 you do and I wish the church would let I t thepeople do in politics as they are a 1 t U i I i mind to Such in substance was this conversation From the tenor of it it i will Jje patent to jail that there is nQ I church interferencejgto politicsin Utah s nJSrogday Jast the writej was sitting I j I at the polls in the Fourth Precinct watch t j ing the voting and while there a lady I came in to cast her ballot She took a I ticket placed it in an envelope and when she offered it to the judges they inquired her name She gave it and it was found that her name was not upon the registration list and so she could not vote She said she could not understand how that was as the teachers had been at her house the Monday before and told her Ward she was to go to the Twentieth School House to vote The judges inquired in-quired of her if she had registered and I she said she had They asked her where she was living at the time she registered I reg-istered and she said in the Eleventh Warn They told her that she must go I to the City Hall then to cast her vote or have the County Registrar transfer her name Yes she said I know I registered reg-istered when I was living in the Eleventh Ward but the teachers told me to come here to role1 We admire the zeal of those teachers and the pertinacity of the lady but still we think the bishop should have more efficient aids He is not merely neglecting his privileges but he is imperilling the rights of a free people We have cited these two instances merely to show how free elections in Utah > are from ecclesiastical influence of any kind The conversation of the apostle apos-tle shows how great a safeguard conventions conven-tions are while the conversation of the lady shows how great is the power of the ballot when placed in the hands of a free agency acting in accordance with the dictates dic-tates of reason untrammeled by any influence Truly there is no union of Church and State in Utah |
