Show I MR GORLINSKIS CONCERT Our Local Artists Score a Genuine Success I After an absence of two years spent abroad in the study of music Mr Gor linski last evening made his debut in Salt Lake City as an artist Mr Gorlinski possesses a baritone voice of fine quality and he has for years been one of the most popular figures on our concert stage His earnest study and efforts abroad to perfect himself in his art were followed with sympathy and interest by his many friends at home and his rap pearance here last night equipped with the results of foreign training was looked forward to with eager interest as a musical musi-cal event Mr Gorlinskis first selection was Verdis Aria Ella giammai mamo which gave the audience an opportunity to judge the full compass of his voice As was to be expected a great improvement is noticeable in range power and management man-agement in short in every respect The delicate pianissimo passages were rendered ren-dered with great sweetness and expression expres-sion There is but one regret left iri i the mind of the listener and that is one for which the artist i not responsible It struck us as if he were physically not robust enough at present to make the strong forte passages tell as finely as the more delicate I is to be hoped however how-ever that Utahs beautiful mountain air will soon give him that robustness which i necessary to make the voice respond to every effort for which the artist may call upon it The effect of Mr Gorlinskis rendering of the Aria was evidenced evi-denced by loud and hearty applause at the close obliging him to repeat a portion por-tion of it Mr Gorlinski was indebted to Miss Naomi Conklin for an intelligent rendering of the difficult accompaniment to his Aria and it was hardly in good I taste for him to make his bow and leave the stage before his accompanist had concluded Miss Conklin subsequently played one movement from Beethovens Sonata Pathetique in a very acceptable manner Miss Edna Russell sang Tostis Ah Dimmi Addio very nicely and was warmly applauded The quartette Sweet and Low by the Misses L Wells and Edna Russell and Messrs J D Spencer and G D Pyper was also well received The instrumental quartettes consisting of Parts I and I of Beethovens Opus 16 in E flat were a success the rendering being given with intelligence and spirit by Messrs Radcliffe Pedersen Weihe and Van Praag The latter gentleman > resented resent-ed as a solo Goltermanns Ala Polacca in D a composition of the bravura order and the first of its kind we believe which that artist arist has as yet presented pre-sented to a Salt Lake audience It was rendered by him with genuine artistic fire and spirit and called from the audience a most enthusiastic encore to which Mr Van Praag responded with a tender little composition which again brought down the house Mr Weihe rendered Vieux temps Fantaisie Caprice op 1 with his usual fine effect By special request Mr Gorlinski sang the familiar ballad Looking Look-ing Back n composition he used to sing beautifully long before he ever thought I Italian training Mrs J Leviberg presented with good effect Robandis Ala Stella Confi dente Mr Van Praag rendering the cello obligate The Lucia duet by Mr Gorlinski and that accomplished lady Mrs A MeD McCook was rendered with smoothness and finish and called forth well merited applause Bearing in mind that this concert was presented to us simply by local lovers of music it was in every respect a success The great mass of the Salt Lake public cannot yet be said to have a fine appreciation of music but such missionary mis-sionary work a our local astists are now doing is bound to be beneficial and educating edu-cating in its results and should be liberally encouraged Mr Gorlinski and the ladies and gentlemen who rallied round him in last nights performance are to be congratulated upon having drawn together one of the most brilliant audiences au-diences that ever assembled in Salt Lake City |
