Commission for its information a letter from United JStates Consul Twitchell at Kingston Canada on the Interim Commerce law and its effects upon our trade With Canada The Consul I says I saysCanadas high protective tariff in wbich there is no prospect of reduction has made me apprehensive from the first of the effect of the increased railroad rates on imports from the United States to this section of Canada Since the fourth of April these rates are shown by the freight bills hero paid t have been increased from 23 to 10 percent per-cent with the change on tho Canadian road After waiting several days for the effects I have made n partial canvass of the importers import-ers of the city of Kingston with the follow ing result The coal dealers are preparing to brine Nova Sootia coal for all purpose brnJ al puroses where Nova Scotia coal can be used two factories which have always used America coal have put in their orders for Nova Scotia coal in hardware and pressed tinwarel find orders have been changed from American to Canadian houses on account of freight in i groceries thero is the same complaint The nroducts of countries outside of the United < States are now expected t go by the way of British Columbia and Halifax An unpleasant unpleas-ant feature in connection with my canvass has been a general expression to find how and where they may make purchases without with-out coming in contact with American railroads roads with the general notion of reaching out for trade It seems to me unnecessary t prophesy what will be the effect upon the American manufacturer the wholesale dealer and the railrods by these general inquiries in-quiries The IntorStato Commerce Commission has received from the Committee on Railroads roads and Transportation of the Prescott Arizona Board of Trade a protest against the suspension of Section 4 and against railroads being allowed to charge e more to any point in the interior between the Mis Boun River and the Pacific Coast
