Show BEAR HUNTING A Party of IHisvouriuiih Attacked by Hears TxvoTender Feet Chewed Special Correspondence THE DEMOCHT A party of emigrants from Missouri consisting of nine wagons and twentysix persons en route to various points in Idaho and Oregon while crossing the divide di-vide between Bear Lake county and Soda Springs about twelve miles east of this place noticed in the road several bear tracks Being in the true sense of the word tenderfeet and never haying seen the monster bruin of the mountains and with natural American instincts inflated their hot young blood was aroused to combat Four of the party left the outfit and proceeded follow the enticing trail all armed with shotguns and revolvers One of the party when not anticipating it found himself with the muzzle of his shotgun within four inches of the nose of a large she bear and two cubs The monarch bruin did not like the close proximity of 1 shotgun particularly in the hands of a tall lean Missourian so took immediate steps to resent the insult and came off victor Mrs Bruin made an attack on the whole party one of whom 1 young man by the name of JA Young was set upon and mangled in the most horrible manner there scarcely being any part of his body but what had marks of the loving affection and embraces of her ladyship His scalp was literally torn from his head his right shoulder was chewed to a mass of bleeding flesh his right elbow was also chewed into jelly hs left hip back and other portions of his body were lacerated with teeths and nails Another young man by the name of John Smith was also injured about the arms and hands After the accident they dispatched a messenger to Soda Springs for surgical aid Dr C F Hoover ad of Montpelier was telegraphed for and met the injured parties at this place The hotels being full and there being no other available place where the doctor could attend to the wounded he took possession of Mr Horsleys store for the occasion After about four hours work of sticking and bandaging wounds the doctor succeeded in making the bearhunters comfortable This morning with their wounded companions the immigrants wended their way westward tho wounded feeling quite cheerful Dr Hoovers smiling and cheerful face is always 1 guarantee of recovery no matter what the case may be Yours DR F SOD Sritixos Idaho June 27 1887 |
