Show > i < 4 Itt It-t SHALLOW PRETENSE The Mormon Statehood cry is like the defendant in a damage suit putting into his answer to the complaint a counterclaim counter-claim to the same effect as that made by the plaintiff While he does not hope for a judgment for a nickel he assumes the aggressive to place the other side partial upon the defensive The Mormon Mor-mon leaders l have no expectation of securing se-curing the admission of Utah Their object is to delude the Gentiles into directing di-recting their efforts against a mythical proposition instead of consolidating their enesgies and resources upon such legislation legisla-tion as was so nearly accomplished accom-plished at the last session of Congress The loyalists of Utah will be foolish indeed if they permit themselves to be gulled by such a shallow shal-low pretense Let them not waste their ammunition upon a decoy dummy Let them rather prepare for another agres sive contest like that of the last session and they can rest assured that the Mormon Mor-mon lobby will drop the Statehood racket like a redhot horseshoe It will find plenty of employment staving off legislation legis-lation without making even a pretense of following up that which they do not expect to accomplish The Mormons will be well satisfied with no legislation whatever what-ever for Utah That is what they are playing for and the Statehood agitation is a part of tueir defensive programme |
