Show I L SEARCHING FOR WITNESSES A Dozen Prominent Persons Commanded Com-manded to Appear Before the Grand J n A DEMOCRAT extra last evening announced an-nounced the fact that the Gardo House had been visited by Deputy Marshals and all persons found there subpoenaed The details area follows About 230 oclock yesterday afternoon subpoenas were placed in the hands of Deputy Marshals Vandercook and Sprague for service upon Ida Taylor Ezra Taylor and several others of the Taylor family Captain Greenman about the same time received similar papers to be served upon Mrs Barratt and her son Samuel Vandercook and Sprague immediately started for the Gardo House to serve their papers They were met at the door by some man whose name they were unable to learn who positively refused to admit them Mr Vandercook advised the fellow fel-low to let them in stating the object of his visit and threatening to procure a search warrant if admission was refused them The inner guard however was obdurate and stated he was under orders t admit no one Marshal Spraguowas then left to guard the premises and see that no one escaped es-caped while Mr Vandercook reported the result of his expedition Judge Z ane was immediately sought and upon learning the facts issued a search warrant war-rant armed with which Marshal Ireland and Mr Vandercook visited the house a second tme They were admitted a soon as the inmates found they possessed authority to make forcible entry and shown through the house They sub poened two ladies and one man whose names could not be learned and were therefore guessed at by the officers The visitation of the officers created considerable excitement and it was rumored a number of special policemen police-men congregated around the Gardo House This however is denied by Marshal Ireland Captain Greenman gained admission to Mrs Barratts house without difficulty by simply stepping inside the door when the servant girl opened it Mrs Barratt refused re-fused either to admit the officer or come out of her apartment until Captain Greenman threatened break down the door when she sentjier son Samuel out to expostulate Young Barrett was served with a subpoena and informed that if his motherdid not admit tho officer or come out of her room a forcible entry would be made Mrs Barrett then came out and was served Bailiff Collins later in the day sub pained Ezra Taylor at the University and Brig Taylor at Dr Sharps office Edward Taylor was also subp ned by Capt Greonman at the Deseret News office These subpoenas all command attendance attend-ance at the Grand Jury room on Tuesday the 17th but what the nature of the investigation vestigation is can of course only be conjectured |
