Show i J f THE EXPOSITION What Colonel Shoup Thinks of Utahs Exhibit Idahos Fie Display Colonel Shoup Idahos commissioner at the New Orleans Exposition arrived over the D R G last evening en route from New Orleans to Salmon City He was met in the Walker House lobby by a DEMOCRAT representative this morning and imparted some very interesting information in-formation Did you see anything of Utahs exhibit ex-hibit at the Exposition 1 asked the reporter re-porter HOh yes replied the Colonel with a smile HI saw Mr Clasby Dr Hamilton smie 11 Marshall and several other Utah products The Utah collection was avery a-very fine one I What became of the colored peoples exhibit sent from this Territory 1 HI presume it went to the colored peo po ples department but I did not see it Has the absence of Utah occasioned much comment H Yes but the blame is laid upon those whose business it was to prepare the exhibit ex-hibit I is generally known that Utah has resources sufficient to form as fine exhibit Territory an n any H How does Idahos display compare with those of other territories 5 Of course I am an interested party but the press and visitors give Idaho credit for making if not the largest the most attractive display of all the Territories Terri-tories Among the mineral products I placed on exhibition between 5000 and 6000 worth of gold dust and bricks The Philadelphia Bay Horse and Salmon river smelters are represented by bullion bul-lion The Queen of the Hills sent about 400 pounds of ore The Parker Minnie Moore Idahoan and Mayflower mines also have specimens of ore on exhibition Exposition as an exhibit of the resources of this country is a success The displays made by the States and Territories are finer than were made at the Centennial but the foreign exhibits are rather poor The Exposition is not in the right locality I would have been much more successful if it had been held in some Northern city I is made up chiefly of the resources of the North anyway any-way Cotton products form but a small portion of it A great injustice has been done the management of the Exposition by the report that the affair has been mismanaged They have run behind some 369000 but have accomplished a great deal in the way of improvements Congress has appropriated 350000 to pay off this indebtedness and all claims from outside of Louisiana are preferred The attendance now is as good as at anytime any-time except during the carnival week and the daily receipts are from 500 to 2000 in excess of the current expenses Col Shoup is called to Idaho by pre sing s-ing business but will return to his post in a few weeks |
