Show I THE WOOL TARIFF I The Republican State platform of Nevada demands the restoration of the tariff of 1867 on wool It should have gone further and demanded that when the law is enacted it should be enforced in letter and spirit as the present law is carried out by the Democratic Administration Adminis-tration Since Mr Clevelands inauguration inaugu-ration American wool has advanced upward up-ward of 20 per cent in price This is owing to the faithful collection of the duty on the foreign article the increase of revenue from that source being even greater proportionately than the advance upon the domestic product Under Republican Re-publican Administration orders from the Revenue Department virtually annulled the law in regard to rates upon certain manufactured woolen cloths and also upon one class at least of the raw material ma-terial The restoration of tho law of 1867 and its enforcement in the manner in which the existing statute was enforced under Republican rulewould not afford as much protection to American growers as they have under the full collection of the present rates which is being made by our Democratic Administration General Neal Dow the great Maine Prohibitionist said that while the Republican party of that State could be trusted to enact Prohibitory laws it was equally certain not to enforce them when passed that the Democratic party while making no Prohibition pre tentions did while in power see that the laws were observed and respected The National Republican party occupies precisely pre-cisely the same position in regard to the tariff It advocates extremely high rates while it failed to collect the more moderate ones when it had the power to do so |
