Show GRAFTS CRITICAL CONDITION A Kcstlcss NIght and Alarming Srmptomsff Cant Stand it I am Going to Die NEw YORK J March 29Tue usual weekly week-ly consultation on General Grants cond tion was held today Doctors Barker Sands Shrady and Douglas being present I The irritation of the nose which had produced < pro-duced a train of symptoms which induce the family to send for the physicians last night had been relieved so that the General Gen-eral had a sleep of four hours from 3 to 7 oclock and naps of more or lesB duration during the morning makin seven or eight hours sleep during the las twentyfour At the consultation tin General presented a much improved appearance ap-pearance Tonight he was free from pain and reasonably free from the annoying annoy-ing discharge which had troubled the < family last night NEW YORK March 30From the Tri june Monday Dr Shrady said after midnight Dr Douglas called for me bout 130 oclock Sunday niornin when pa the way to General Gran where he had been summoned by ames enger a short time before I W dressed hastily and in a few moments was rapidly driven to the house of the General Upon arriving there we found the family ip and alarmed at the symptoms developed devel-oped soon after Dr Douglas had left the patient n few hours before There was 10 indication after the General had one to bed and before Douglas had tarted for home that there would be any change for the worse within a short eriod At 2 a m when we saw the General he was much distressed while he was dozing there had been an accumulation accu-mulation of phlegm in the rear of the lasal passages and he was awakened by a L sense of suffocation and difficulty of reathing > The patient became appre tensive at the sudden development of new symptoms that were attended with a L prospect of serious results and wanted an explanation of the trouble he consequently equently desired the presence of his physician and we were sent for Ye immediately made an examination of the throat and found the palate considerably iderably swollen and the throat inflamed and congested more than usual The anodyne dyne > he took before going to bed was given in separate doses but in consequence conse-quence of the existing irritating substance the throat as well as the distress caused bv > the inflammation the anodyne failed I I t o have its proper effect and he was unable una-ble > to sleep The patient got up from the bed > when he felt the distressing situation Upon awakening he sat in an easy chair Latcr the General had four hours sleep One physician was present with him all the time during his sleep and strict Iatch was kept of every movement but there was an entire absence of anything to occasion any further treatment The Generals family remained up all nightlong night-long and it was a night of suspense to them They were much relieved how ever when the spasmodic attack had been subdued and they were ssured that there was no occasion for fear of any return of the bad symptoms Vhen the General awoke at 7 a m he partook of a small amount of liquid food hich he was able to swallow without I distress and during the twelve hours after 2 a n the patient had between even and eight hours sleep It was of course artificial sleep induced by an nodyne At 9 45 p m the General requested re-quested that a dispatch be sent to Dr ouglas asking him to come and see him The patient was not alarmed but wanted to have his physicians near him He was not in a critical condition and there was nothing to warrant the message but he simply requested they be sent for and Dr Douglas remained with the General all night in accordance with the patients wishes Before the General went to bed his throat was treated with the anodyne I given The prospects were at the last account that the General would have a good nights rest and that his condition I j would be much improved Harrison the Generals servant told a member of the I household in the afternoon that when the Ii General struggled out of bed he said to him in a matteroffact way I cant stand this Harrison I am going to die Tonight General Grant became anxious to see the doctors and they arrived at his house after 11 oclock They found the patients throat much better than at the consultation although there was still slight congestion The doctors dreised I it gave the General another anodyne and put him to bed They remained with the General all night and Dr Shrady will stay tomorrow night Physicians are in the house to allay the Generals own nervousness I ner-vousness and calm the anxiety of the family |
