Show 1 A BLEECKER STREET BLAZE Four Houses on Fire In a New York Street Heavy Damages and Numerous Escapes NEW YORK March 30A fire completely com-pletely destroyed Schumacher Ettlin gers art establishment 32 34 and 36 Bleecker street tonight Total loss about 350000 of which 100000 is on building It is believed to be insured It was over four hours before the flames were under control In consequence of the secure way in which the building with its iron shutters was locked the firemen had much difficulty in forcing an opening through which a stream could be sent When the hole was made the smoke and flames drove the firemen back and more time was lost Ten thousand people flocked to the vicinity and twenty engines and the reserve police force of five precincts were at the scene half an hour after the conflagration started The colony of Italians in the tenements adjoining ad-joining the blazing building were hurried from their homes and were no sooner out of the way than two fiveton water tanks fell from the roof of No 34 carry ing with them portions of the root and of the front and side walls Several persons per-sons were knocked down but no one seriously injured Engine No 20 was considerably damaged and the water tower wrecked Then the roof fell in but the flames were not allowed to spread to i adjoining tenements r I |
