Show Mans Inhumanity Working Girlsi I have seen all about the shirt makers and how they have a union said a mechanic to a reporter but those girls it seems to me < were treated splendidly splen-didly compared with others in this city Do you know of any sewinggirls working for less than from 5 to 6 per week asked the reporter My daughter works in a factory where they do nothing else than hem handkerchiefs handker-chiefs There are from twenty to eighty girls employed and about ten extraordinary extraor-dinary fast hands make sometimes 7 a week The others earn from 3 to 5 But that is not all Every one is docked 25 cents a week to pay the wages of a machinist who receives 15 a week Then when a machine needs overhauling overhaul-ing it is sent out and the girl has to pay the cost At one time a girl had to pay 12 and others 6 on one or two different occasions They have to pay 28 cents a spool for cotton which costs the firm 18 cents by the gross If a needle or a screw is broken they are charged 5 cents every time Some time since the girls struck for higher wages and in reply to the question How are we to live were told it was none of the firms business how they lived Its pretty hard on those who reside with their friends but I dont know how those live who have no friends Talk about raising girls who fall Better prevent their falling by paying living wagesNew York World 1 |
