Show Where Hugo Wished to be Buried Somewhere about halfway between Havre and Rouen a couple of miles below be-low Caudebec the quiet little village oi Villequier fringes the right bank of the the Seine The casual tourist who lands there from the steamer is always recommended recom-mended to visit the parishchurch The interior of that edifice is wellworthy of inspection especially on account of its windows one of which represents in old stained glass a seafight fought several centuries ago between English and French vessels But still more interesting interest-ing than the inside of the church is the Gods Acre which outside surrounds it There among other gravestones nor far from two shadowy yews stands one which records the fact that beneath it rest the remains of the partner of Victor Hugos married life Next to it is another which bears an inscription telling tell-ing a truly pathetic tale Beneath it were laid many years ago the bodies recovered recov-ered from the Seine of Victor Hugos tenderly loved daughter and her husband hus-band The young couple who had been married but a very short time went out one morning full of life and mirth for an excursion on the river A storm came on the boat was upset and they as well as two of their relatives were drowned Close by the two gravestones is a vacant place covered by the mossy turf It is the spot reserved for the reception of the great poet who has elected to take his final rest beside the wife and the daughter daugh-ter whose loss had saddened his life Pall JfaZZ Gazfttc |
