W Canning in Editor-in-Chief When the college was renamed Utah Technical College in the late the student newspaper was first produced Originally the colleges college's newspaper was published under the name Tech Topics and acted more as asa asa asa a newsletter rather than thana a newspaper Over time however the newspaper evolved into an award- award winning publication After only a few years as Tech Topics the newspaper was renamed Po Points West a publication sponsored and published by the Student Government Association The Points West newspaper won sev several ral awards over the course course of 20 years including the 1986 American Press Association second place and the 1987 American Press Association first place Iri In the late when the thes s I to the newspaper decided to change as well The Horizon was introduced and quickly became one of the best student newspapers in inthe inthe inthe the state as well as the country garnering several awards on the national and state level The Horizon was awarded the 1993 Columbia Scholastic Press Association first place and the 1994 Utah Press Association first place The Horizon was sponsored by bythe bythe bythe the Student Government Association and thus did not have the same same free press designation as other newspapers In 2000 the Student Government Association gave up control of the student newspaper and the newly formed Globe Student Media Council called Student Media Council at the time took over as the controlling interest With new leadership the H newspaper newspaper- newspaper was was renamed The Globe The Globe began to grow and gaiT gain the respect of the community In the fall of 2004 The Globe changed from its longtime once-a- once week publication to twice- twice a In August of 2006 The Globe was awarded second place in the Associated ed College Press' Press National College Publication Workshops in Washington DC D.C. Best in Show for General Excellence for year two-year schools contest Today The Globe prints in a week twice-a-week format with a broadsheet style newspaper Although the student newspaper is governed by bythe bythe bythe the Globe Student Media Council the publications publication's staff maintains all editorial decisions regarding the newspaper As an independent voice The Globe is able to report on all related i events and issues while maintaining the highest journalistic r integrity a 0 |
