W Canning in Editor-in-Chief To become one of the largest community colleges in the United States it has taken thousands of students thousands of graduates and 14 campuses throughout the Salt Lake Valley Some campuses are small and intimate offering just a afew afew afew few classes to help students stay close to home Others are large and offer anything needed to walk away with a degree Of the 14 campuses Redwood South City and Jordan are the three main campuses Between the three nearly every event at is held at one or the other Here is a glimpse at what those three campuses offer to students Redwood Campus No matter the degree if you are or have ever been beena a student at you have most likely visited the Redwood Campus Redwood Campus is the most well- well known and holds the longest tenure as a facility The Redwood Campus is home to not only the schools school's president Cynthia Bioteau but also to the student body president and the Globe Student Media Center Redwood began its storied past as lowly little little Salt Lake Area Vocational School in n 1959 It was originally established to aid returning World War Var II veterans Nearly 10 years later the school was renamed Utah Technical College or Utah Tech in 1967 For the first while there were only a few buildings The Administrative Building was the college said former fonner Utah Tech student Steve Lee According to Lee there were only two or three e buildings at the time and most classes focused more moreon moreon moreon on specific trades Jay L. L Nelson was the first school president to have an office at the Redwood campus Nelson held the position of president until 1978 the longest tenure of any president to date In 1987 under the direction of then-president then Orville D. D Carnahan who served as president from 1981 to 1992 Utah Tech was renamed once again The new moniker that would grace the school would be Salt Salt Lake Lake Community College or as it is known by students or Slick Today the Redwood Campus Camp s is main campus and houses the Athletic department as well as other vital parts of the college South City Campus Entering the world as South High School over 75 years ago the fonner former high school w was s renovated and turned into the South City Campus The high school was originally built in 1931 to aid the students of the southern Salt Lake area As a high school South graduated over students before the doors were closed in 1988 Today South City Campus is the schools school's second largest campus housing hundreds of classes for nearly every every major South City also is host to the colleges college's performing arts theater The Grand Jordan Campus One of newest campuses Jordan is rearing and ready for the upcoming school year In 2001 the campus opened to students in the I southwestern Salt Lake Valley area The Jordan Campus currently sits as third largest campus but is quickly growing and in the future could be the largest The campus is currently constructing the new Health Science Building at Jordan which will act as the headquarters of nursing program Jordan Campus is also home to the colleges college's baseball team at Cate Gate Field |
