Show M s Dance Co o. o Be Begins ins Season eason oil ti t- t t. t By Rigo Riga Flores 1 Staff Writer REDWOOD- REDWOOD A dancer has the power to captivate stimulate or r inspire an audience This art form uses the body to express emotion requiring much strength and flexibility flexibility flexibility to move across the stage gracefully contorting to body to express abstract thought Salt Lake Community College offers dance classes ranging ranging ranging rang rang- ing from ballet baIlet to modem modern as well weIl as a dance company that students may audition to join Salt Lake Community College Dance Company Compan The Associate Professor of Fine Arts and the Artistic Director for Dance Company is Tess Boone She began dancing about the age of eight and has taught for 20 years 19 of those years have been at c n marked September the first performance for Dance Company for the year They were asked to aid the Salt Lake Mens Men's Choir Seasons of Love perfo performance nce at the Jeanne Wagner Theatre in Downtown Salt Lake City It was not the first time for Dance Company to work m with the Salt Lake Mens Men's Choir but it was the company's first performance performance performance per per- held at the Jeanne Wagner Theatre and was an offer that Boone didn't wa want t to refuse There are a total of 18 dancers in the company 17 females and one male dancer All AIl had previous training from private lessons or enrolled at a high school dance team When asked about what is looked for in a dancers dancer's audition to join the S CC Dance Company Boone said must have basic technique body strength flexibility and perform performance performance per per- form nce level is looked at to join f the the company The Dance Company dancers practiced six hours a week for the Seasons of Love performance The acts ranged from an African style movement to jazz like dancing showing off the dancers dancer's tech tech- A semi enchanting g duet performance was danced and choreographed choreographed choreographed cho cho- by Jason and Caralee Norton They are both company members Boone was very pleased with and z Nortons Norton's ability to choreograph and thought they pulled it off will The opening act for Dance Company showed a abit abit abit bit of nervousness in the dancers in the sense that synchronization and focus was slightly off They had good form and extension but buta a better focus would have added more gracefulness to the piece As the performance continued the l dancers seemed more more relaxed allowing them to express themselves themselves themselves them them- selves freely across the stage The colorful costumes and drum beating beating beating beat beat- ing of ya visually excited the audience showing no limits in ability The final dance act was c accompanied by The Salt Lake I Mens Men's Choir singing Seasons of Love from the musical RENT It began in allegro as the dancers jumped on stage showing showing showing show show- ing individual abilities and then uniting to softly dance for the remaining act When asked Boone gave her opinion about the company's performance stating the company had a wonderful performance their energy was was was' high they were focused and danced like Slona s. s A e Ll |
