Show No Comeback for Bruins against CSt Eric Bresee Sports Editor The ranked nationally-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins volleyball team began region play with games against College of Eastern Utah Ricks and College of Southern Idaho The ninth ranked Bruins went 2 1 in the games losing only to the four- four time defending national champions The Bruins opened on the road at CEU on Sept 4 and went on to pound the Eagles 15 10 8 15 15 15 In the first game the Bruins Bruns jump to an early 6 0 lead with outside hitter Jeanette Graves serving on five straight Bruin points However CEU came roaring back backas as they scored seven straight points to take the lead 7 After Bruins Head Coach Tom Peterson called a time out CEU continued to score three more points making it a 10 0 run The Bruins scored nine straight to win the first game 15 After taking the second game 8 15 the Bruins looking every bit worthy of their national ranking reeled off 10 straight points in the third game The Bruins allowed CEU to go on runs of 5 0 and 6 0 before finally putting them away 15 The Bruins opened their home schedule against Ricks on Sept 12 The game brought good and bad news for forthe forthe forthe the second year team The good They beat the only team other than that beat them in the tournament The bad Sophomore outside hitter Regan Taylor went down with tom torn ligaments ligaments aments in her left ankle According to Peterson it will be three weeks or more before she can do any kind of work on it The Bruins started the first game like they did in many games of the tournament from behind Ricks jumped out to a 5 0 lead before Graves hammered the ball to get the Bruins on the board With the score 73 73 73 7 3 in favor of Ricks last years year's All- All American Rosa Torres served up anace anace an anace ace to be begin gin a 6 0 run to take a 9 7 lead Rocky Johnson ended the run with a kill from the back row took the first game 15 The second game started with a twist The Bruins scored the first two points of the game Then with UCLA transfer Mari Burningham serving Ricks scored seven straight points to take the lead 7 2 With the score 8 10 for Ricks freshman Emily Van Dyke took control control control con con- of the game Van Dyke had three kills for scores and served on two other points as the Bruins score seven straight to win the second game 15 In the third game the Bruins again fell behind as Ricks scored the first six points Down 7 2 the Bruins began to rally They scored five straight to tie the game However there would be no comeback in the game as Ricks scored five straight of its own and won the game 15 After not being able to finish off Ricks in the third game the Bruins wasted no time in exterminating the team from Rexburg 15 The 3 10 Bruins then were hosts to the undefeated time four-time defending national champion Golden Eagles Eagleson on Sept 13 brought in a game win streak and are the one hurdle the Bruins must defeat if they want a shot at the national championship The first game was competitive early as the Eagles led 3 With leading 6 3 the Eagles cranked out eight straight points to lead 14 The Bruins began their comeback as they scored five straight of their own capped off by a spectacular kill killby killby killby by Graves Nevertheless the Bruins dug too large a hole and dropped the first game 15 jumped out to a 6 2 lead early in the second game but the Bruins showed more resiliency as they scored five straight to take the lead 7 The Eagles answered the Bruins run as they scored six straight points of their own held off the Bruins and if j Y p l iv Ii i Ii IiA J ja A J l. l J 4 v. v r L z 1 f f d v A v vit of Mg v p Y t t.
