| Show MI M Poor Shooting Contribute to to two Foul losses for Women By Corey Bullock Sports Editor Not shooting well from nom the field is something the Women's Basketball team Basketball team has had to deal with all year However they haven't had to deal with a poor shooting percentage percent percent- age a poor defensive effort and foul trouble in the post This past weekend at Northern Idaho and Ricks College they had to todeal todeal todeal deal with all three in their two loses At Northern Idaho they lost 71 to 57 and followed that up by dropping an 87 73 contest at Ricks on Saturday In the game at Northern Idaho it was poor shooting and foul trouble for the Lady Bruins three post players play play- ers that spelled doom for We played hard but we just cant can't help ourselves on the offensive end Head Coach Monica Starrett said In the first half Natalie Prescott Katie Welsh and Stark all had three fouls and spent time on the bench With those three out Northen Idaho led at hal half halftime f time In the second the Lady Bruins made a run by applying a full court press that help them cut the lead to eight points Stephanie Johnston then made a steal and was headed for the basket when a Northern Idaho player bumped her trying to steal the ball Johnston rolled her ankle and went down She has a severely sprained 1 ankle and will most likely be out for forc forthe c w the rest of the s season ason leaving only nine players on the Lady Bruins ros ros- ros- ros ter For the game the Lady Bruins shot 27 percent from nom the field and 52 percent from the free throw line Starret said Our shooting has become a combination of inexperience ence and not a good shot at times It really has become a mental thing Although the shooting percentage increased against Ricks it didn't increase enough to help to a victory They only shot 31 percent from the field However the Lady Bruins came out shooting the ball well enough to build a 10 point lead in hi the first half Yet their defense was uncharacteristically uncharacteristically uncharacteristically poor as Ricks closed the gap to only be down two points poin at the end of the first half Two points was the only thing the two teams with just over t vo minutes to play and Ricks had the lead had the ball stolen and Ricks scored to increase the lead to 5 After another turnover and a technical foul Ricks lead by 10 points However the Lady Bruins never never- r jiL 7 t r v. v ak FN i A Shelley Karren scored 31 points in two games for the Lad Lady Bruins She had 20 i T against Ricks and 11 against Y said die as the cut the lead to six points with 32 seconds on the clock Yet this time it was a missed execution execution tion on a play that spelled doom for T M o We have to learn to play with a lead and to play on opposing teams teams- floors Starrett said The Lady Bruins play their first Region 18 Post season Tournament game against Dixie on March 7 The Lady Bruins have beat Dixie twice this year already The game will be held at 2 PM at Utah Valley State College in Orem Utah |
