Show Just claims, nothing more? Dear Editor: Many in Congress claim that they are for cutting the budget and making our government more responsible. Many times, however, these claims are not more than that. Jim Hansen's cries for a balanced budget are hypocritical. He .votes to cut funds for education but is willing to allow the military to do whatever it wants. We will never balance the budget until the military comes in line. Everybody has heard about the $600 toilet seats and $400 hammers. Much of this is due to ridiculous regulations that the military imposes on defense de-fense contractors. However, defense contractors have also been involved in fraud and abuse, though none of them have been from Utah. Jim Hansen voted against a proposal to end contractor waste, fraud and abuse. He voted to allow contractors to rip-off the taxpayers. He voted against an amendment which would have empowered the Inspector General of the Defense Department to suspend payments to a contractor or to debar a contractor if the Inspector General had found waste, fraud or abuse in connection con-nection with the defense contract. Jim Hansen has not represented Utah well. Gunn McKay will do a much better job in cutting the budget and representing Utah's interests. Coleen Muir |
