Show A i Hole in My Soul Appendicitis is Like Student Government By Nathan Nelson Editorial Editor Very early one morning a missionary mission mission- ary friend of mine sits up in bed with severe abdominal pains that he recognizes recognizes recognizes as appendix problems He wakes up his missionary companion who immediately calls an ambulance for the sick missionary missionary missionary mis mis- the driver tells him that he was off oft for the night and wont won't be beable beable beable able to come pick him up By now my friend is in a lot of pain The driver driver driver dri dri- dri- dri ver suggests calling a cab It gets worse The two call a cab which is about their only option at the moment and it comes after a few minutes minutes minutes min min- utes to take them away Then once they get to the hospital the receptionist reception reception- tells them that all the doctors mind that ALL the doctors are on vacation vacation vacation vaca vaca- tion and suggests that they come back in three weeks Now this actually happened The doctors were actually gone My friend knowing that appendicitis wont won't wait three weeks made other arrangements to get medical help Oddly enough the inflamed appendix had settled down and the surgeon decided not to remove it An appendix is an interesting thing Its It's a wormy flap of tissue that dangles around the intestines It serves no known function and for all intents and purposes should be ignored Yet if that little tail of nothingness should decide to make a fuss it requires immediate medical attention An appendix is also a symbolic for fora a number of useless things we insist on surrounding ourselves with Our cultural fabric is rife with quirks that we would rather ignore but they occasionally occasionally occasionally occa occa- make themselves enough of a bother that it requires immediate attention Here at we call our quirk the Executive Council At least that was my impression following last weeks week's Council session which I attended Heres Here's the point and Ive I've said it before student government is a lot less important than those involved in it would like to think The idea is good the education is valuable and the experience is priceless but the organization itself is a three-dollar three bill Now this shouldn't be interpreted as The Executive Council is Satan During the meeting I was impressed y with their ambition and campaign problems aside they seem straightforward ward and considerate Okay against my better instincts Ill I'll admit it I liked and was impressed with the Council But that doesn't change the fact that a 10 minute discussion on pagers is unimportant The same with Lagoon vouchers barbecues game rooms activities mission statements and campus liaisons Basically nothing nothing nothing noth noth- ing the Council does really matters It all goes back to being a school and the only important issues concern education Executive Council for all their perceived might cant can't hire a teacher or schedule a course That's why the most important thing any student in the government will do is educate themselves from the experience Unfortunately the only problem with logic is that its it's a two edged sword The same line of reasoning would indicate that any other student organization is similarly unimportant However we at the Horizon ret refuse se to believe that Besides if Im I'm writing the column I can make the rules right |
