Show Satellite Activities Slashed To Salvage Tight Budget By Theresa OConnor O'Connor Staff Writer Satellite programs have been reduced by half to keep the spring budget budget budget bud bud- get under wraps With the risk that this years year's budget would not cover the expenses of the regularly scheduled satellite activities this quarter Tara Vest the activities vice president and the other members of the Executive Council condensed the programs No matter how much you plan this happens every year during spring quarter when the budget is running out Vest said The satellite programs are held on the Airport Millcreek ly Tooele and West Jordan Campuses Campes The satellite activities are held to bring participation participation par par- and enthusiasm from students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents about Generally the council plans two activities per quarter at each satellite however for this quarter they have scheduled only one activity for each location For Eor example the activities board has planned for the performance of Four Shadows Shadow's a band sponsored co-sponsored by the Fine Arts and Lecture board They have also planned a bowling night and a Buzz game night for students stu- stu students students stu stu- dents to enjoy o q f The activities board is known for developing fun projects on all campuses however the list on the wall of the oft offices ces does not encompass the long list of activities they usually pro pro- vide Spring quarter people are re not as interested in the activities so it is kind of a good thing that this is the time the end of the budget roles around People are graduating or just sick of school we get a lot more participation in our activities in the fall she said It is not a rule that we have two satellite programs per quarter it is just something that we do Vest stated in defense of the cuts Vest who has served on the College Activities Board for a year helped in the budget planning planning planning plan plan- ning last year The satellite budget which was planned last year by Dawn Tavis the former activities vice president has allowed for equal activities throughout the year however now that the end of the year has come there may not be he enough money to absorb the activities for the rest of spring quarter Every activity costs a little more than planned We Ve did not want to go over budget so we have cut half of the satellites am a.m. and pm p.m. activities Vest explained Vest went on to explain that all the departments face the same problem noting that spring quarter of last year the money allocated for tuition waivers ran out and could no longer be guaranteed The Executive Council usually holds two days of activities one activity for am a.m. students and another for pm p.m. students While the council will still hold activities for the respective students there will only be one day per satellite campus While the Executive Council have been responsible for bringing the Monday Munchies to students it has been hit slightly by the cuts The Monday Munchies is going pretty good I dont don't know if well we'll always do it on Mondays though Vest noted pointing out times when support has dwindled due to the chaos that Mondays often cause for students It is kind of hard because you do donot donot donot not want to plan the same activities every year and you can only guess athow at athow athow how much they will cost We Ve even planned over budget to cover any extra costs but we still needed to cut back Vest said These budget cutbacks should only affect spring quarter because a new budget will arrive on July 1 The new budget will leave the Executive Council Council Council Coun Coun- cil to try once again in their attempts to end the year within the established budget whether or not this will occur is yet to be seen |
