Show Lets Let's do something about trash 1 Dear Editor I think its it's time we face the problem of what to do with our trash No one likes to think of garbage We find it easier to just throw it in a trash can put it out once a week and forget about it It seems only after a particular problem appears that man begins to consider the consequences consequences consequences conse conse- of what he is doing I hear people talk about acid rain polluted waters the ozone disappearing But our trash has been somewhat overlooked The person on the street if asked would say someone always takes the trash away every week so what is the problem No longer can we just dump trash in a container and forget about it Many of f our cities are running out of places to dump trash New York City's acre year old dump site on Staten Island will be the highest point on the Eastern sea board south of Maine rising some feet above New York Harbor The New York garbage barge that traveled from port to port with its tons of unwanted trash went some miles before unloading City planners urban engineers and environmentalists environmentalists environmentalists en en- say it is impossible to continue present rates of consumption and waste Our responsibility before God and to ourselves ourselves ourselves our our- selves and future generations is to maintain a clean environment To neglect this responsibility responsibility responsibility is to choose the way of selfishness and self We can all start questioning the need for disposable products We can start refusing to buy items that we know will be thrown away after just one use disposable razors cigarette lighters roasting pans diapers towels flashlights flashlights flashlights flash flash- lights pens bottles plates cups Demand paper sacks at the grocery store refuse the plastic bags Recycling saves resources money energy and landfill space It provides jobs generates revenue and reduces air water and soil tion Unless we all as individuals mend our ways and reorder our priorities we will one day find ourselves buried alive in our own trash We owe it to God to and to our children to make the effort Signed Vaughn Gee |
