Show Literary Club Clubre reading id draws d aws atte attentive audience audien e Mark Hewitt Contributing Writer l A new new era in arts on on the i campus of was initiated f t t J Tuesday evening May 23 f when Janet Sylvester a noted local poet read from froin her L works wor for a large audience of 7 Salt alt Lake Community College students and faculty The reading was sponsored by the Literary Club in cooperation with the Utah 1 y f t ff i r Arts Council Sylvester who says she's been writing poetry since the r. r age of 13 is the author of 7 That Mulberry Wine a S S. S d book ot of poetry p and a teaching fellow y at the tle University of Utah I Included a among ong her plentiful literary honors are the Award and publication publication publication cation in The Morrow Anthology Anthology Anthology An An- of Younger American Poets She also has a series of poems which will be published in China At the reading she read works from That Mulberry Wine and from a second forthcoming collection entitled entitled entitled en en- titled The Road Between the Walls The reading was divided into three main sec sec- sec sec- First she read the title poem from That Mulberry Wine and ands and continued with selections from that text including including including in in- a humorous poem with poignant undercurrents entitled Arrowhead Christian Christian Christian Chris Chris- tian Center and No Smoking Smoke Smoking ing Luncheonette The second section of poems dealt specifically with the authors author's experiences during the One poem which talked about the Kent State shooting of 1970 was titled Sergeant Arrives Other poems in this category included Avocados and Illumination Rounds Third in the sections was a smattering of poems from her new book These poems in included included eluded the title poem The Road Between Walls Love Poem and By Now We Were Fr Freezing Sylvester who has given s seven seven so f far r this spring at BYU Westminster C College and Weber S State ate among others says that the audience at was one of the best she's seen Many audiences at poetry readings slump in their chairs and drool this one was alert and receptive I felt very Impressed impressed impressed im im- Im- Im pressed with and welcomed by the audience Sylvester says that she did not come from an academic family and that her first experiences experiences experiences ex ex- with the writing of poetry came from com competition petition peti- peti tion with a friend We were concerned with quantity not quality she said It lilt wasn't until I was about 20 that I came to realize that there were really such things as living writers She worked in publishing while going to school and began writing on the side According to Cheryl Sned- Sned don treasurer secretary of the Literary Club and a member of the audience it paid off I Iwas Iwas Iwas was very happy with the read read- ing Im I'm pleased to see tithe Literary Club finally functioning functioning functioning function function- ing fully She added that the faculty turnout was excellent Its lilts nice to See faculty fac support for the continuation of arts on campus They h help lp to generate the wonderful artistic artistic artistic artis artis- tic atmosphere that many of ofus ofus ofus us wan want to create here on carnit cam carn- it pus L t G. G Barnes literary arts coordinator for the Utah Arts Council was also present at atthe atthe atthe the reading The liThe event was terrifically detailed he said It lilt was obvious that a great deal of time and energy was put into the production of this reading Barnes said that there is a definite probability of another Utah Arts Council event We are encouraged encouraged encouraged en en- when the students not the staff approach us with witha a proposition That is what happened in this case This indicates indicates indicates in in- to us that the students are enthusiastic about their programs and when that is the case we are arc committed to providing the funding for such activities It is through such student activities said Barnes that the Arts Council finds a venue for local talent Since the Arts Council plays a supporting role in the propagation of the arts in Utah we rely on our student contacts for many of our programs He said the reading was only another reaffirmation reaffirmation reaffirmation reaf- reaf of the success of the r Arts Council and a source of Y pride for the campus' campus efforts in the arts it |
