Show Never too late for education r ra y le S o R 14 a 30 J n A G k M 3 a v vr e r S SA A Vicki McPhail Staff Writer Freda Smith Shutt didn't decide to go to college until her children were grown After attending several of her childrens children's college graduations she decided she too wanted to todon todon todon don a cap and gown y No Now she and her son Rodney 22 both attend Born in Knottingham England Freda finished public school at age 14 and then went to work as an office girl At that time only the affluent could afford to send their children to private high schools And Fredas Freda's father felt that children should discontinue dis discontinue discontinue dis- dis continue school and go to work as early as possible After joining the church at age 23 Freda immigrated to Salt Lake City where she secured employment as a secretary She met her husband George Shutt former US U.S. Naval chief while he was on leave in the Salt Lake area After moving to San Francisco to be near George she later married him They had six children five of whom are arc still living After living all over the US U.S. George retired from the US U.S. Navy and the settled in Bountiful George died in 1980 Freda has been employed in food services with the Davis County School District for 14 years Three years ago inspired by her childrens children's success in college Freda decided to do doo something to further her own tion She began with a high school equivalency GED test After that the search was on for a col col- col- col lege With some persuasion from a neighbor Grant Smart who is an associate professor of social sciences at Freda decided to enroll enroll enroll en en- roll at Last winter Freda fell and broke her hip while in a computer lab on campus and was forced to withdraw from school She's still on crutches but expects a full recovery She said Im excited to be back in school again I was so disappointed that I had to withdraw and miss a quarter Freda attends at night while her herson herson herson son Rodney attends days Both are on scholarships ps Freda will complete her AS degree this summer She has been accepted to the University of Utah for fall quarter She will seek a degree in university studies One of Fredas Freda's ambitions when she is finished with school is to teach adults to read She feels that illiteracy is a real lem lcm Rodney will graduate after fall quarter He plans to continue his education at the U of U also He currently works part time as asan asan asan an assistant printer at a local newspaper He plans to be a teacher i |
