Show Hispanic speakers address S 'S student opportunities Lori Steadman Staff As a segment in the weeklong weeklong week week- long celebration of Cinco de deMayo Mayo fayo hosted a panel of Hispanic speakers on Tuesday Tuesday Tues Tues- day May 2 Josie Val dez from the Small Business Administration Ad- Ad ministration Alex Hurtado Entrepreneur and Mike Gallegos Gallegos Gal Gal- legos administrator with the Salt Lake County Job Training program emphasized in their remarks the opportunities available to students in today's world orld including those with ith a Hispanic heritage Val dez was raised in a tough neighborhood in Houston by a mother widowed at age 25 However she believes her cultural bi-cultural background was not a detriment detri ment but a benefit Life is a arn rn colored multi Val dez stated She encouraged encouraged en- en the students to take opportunities and not wait to tobe tobe be asked to participate in life Speaking in reference to lifes life's opportunities Hurtado a leader on the Republican National Committee said Decide where you are going to sit and go sit there He also cautioned that you must be willing to pay for that desired seat Hurtado believes the days for being what you want to be are here and no longer can minorities blame their location family and not even God Mike Gallegos was raised in Bingham Canyon where his father worked in the mining mining min min- ing industry However Gallegos' Gallegos father encouraged him to pursue another career After completion of high school while working two jobs scholarships provided his start here formerly Utah Technical College in the early He was directed into the field of auto mechanics but was also interested interested in- in in business When his vocational sponsor discovered discovered dis- dis covered his side study of business they took away his tools Gallegos said it hurt to be a dreamer and it is important for students to work hard to gain an tion |
