| Show The Th e Fly II 2 0 1 1 2 star Film Review by Mike Richan The director of 1 2 z this sequel Chris ChrisI I j. j r r won an anS t L i Oscar for his S special effects work on David Cronenberg's The Fly in 1986 If there is any sense of justice in this world and I am prepared to admit there isn't he should be forced to return it for The Fly II and I dont don't mean just for the effects the whole film reeks Here is a firm entry for Worst of 89 bolstered by an inane script with literally laughable dialogue there are moments you'd think Oliver Stone had his hand in it passionless passionless passionless pas pas- performances from Eric and Daphne both capable of better better better bet bet- ter and wicked intolerable amounts of blood and glop poured to excess by Mr Its It's no blessing that the story itself is as enjoyable as a knot in your shoelace i is the son of Jeff Goldblum star of the 1986 remake He isI is I raised by Mr Bartok of BarF Bartok Bartok Bar- Bar F tok Industries an evil evilL L f businessman intent on exploiting exploiting ex ex- S eventual I genetic mutation for control i of the capitalist world f meets and falls for i just before he starts to mutate into a fly and oh yes he discovers discovers discovers dis dis- dis- dis covers how to reverse the process Armed with the inevitable inevitable inevitable in in- evitable and a squadron of ofA 1 A like cartoon-like supporting r characters to up goop-up and j. j It knock down saves the r day by swapping genes with Bartok and leaving the evil man a mutilated helpless puppet-like puppet special effect Not that the special effects effects effects ef ef- come only at the end treads water between each effects scene patiently waiting his chance to do good work squashing heads biting off fingers ripping off faces Interspersed is the laughable dialogue How fast is the mutation spreading and passionless passion passion- less performances mentioned earlier Not much else except dreary moments of predict predict- ability There is none of the tragicomedy present in Cronenberg's film never a tastefully handled moment and always the promise of a disgusting effect around every corner The ending is patent Hollywood contrivance contrivance contrivance con con- and the film film- has film has absolutely absolutely absolutely ab ab- ab- ab no effect upon the viewer other than visceral This sequel was crying loudly for help from the moment the idea was born Where is Vincent Price with a boulder when you need him |
