Show Welding open house Sparks will surely fly when Salt Lake Community College holds a special Open House on Thursday Feb 2 to acquaint people with its welding department The purpose of the 10 am a.m. to 2 pm p.m. informal activity is to give people who think they might be interested in getting into welding an opportunity to find out what its it's all about The labs in the Metal Trades Building will be set up with displays displays displays dis dis- dis- dis plays and demonstrations from suppliers and the department department department depart depart- ment itself There will be faculty members to visit with information on job prospects and light refreshments also Division Chairman John Udy says has one of the finest welding training facilities available anywhere We have spacious labs and we teach all forms of welding says Udy He notes also that high tech has invaded even this traditional vocational skill Computerization and robotics are here At every instructional program is guided by an advisory advisory ad ad- committee composed of people representing many facets of the industry The welding program is no exception Because of the drive and encouragement of advisory committee committee committee com com- Chairman Bert Walker and his group the welding curriculum is up-to-date up and comprises the skill training and information needed as graduates go to work There is in fact a shortage of welders both in the state and nation Udy says employment calls frequently come into asking for names of qualified prospective employees I gather there are more jobs available than there are compe competent competent com com- pe ent artisans Our committee members tell us of positions available in Utah Nevada and other regional areas which bode well not only for the president but for some time to come unless there is some major dip in the economy Everyone interested in finding o out t more about welding is invited to come to the open house whether or not they are currently employed t l |
