Show Publishers Set Book Prices Too High J by Joey McNeill The prices at the college bookstore are often ridiculous Many books are obviously overpriced overpriced overpriced over over- priced and the ones that really get hurt are the students Take for example a book that I bought called caled The Fundamentals of Journalism Its It's about it has a cheap paper cover and cheap binding Pat Maryon my journalism teacher at estimates it is approximately eight years out of date The cost is For just twenty five cents more a friend of mine bought Art Through the Ages It is over eight hundred pages long has beautifully detailed color illustrations it is a hard cover cover book and has excellent ilent binding I was ticked This is just one of the many examples that fill the stores store's shelves The responsibility for the cost of the books lies not with the bookstore but with the publishers Many people want to blame the bookstore for the prices of books when in actuality the publishers set the prices The publishers will increase their price then sell the books at a wholesale discount price The school then raises the price of the book at a certain percentage to make a profit to keep the store going So the school really has no control over the cost of the book I rhad had the opportunity to speak to Steve Ferre Ferre the main purchaser for forthe forthe the bookstore He said Personally Im n concerned about bout the prices of books I dont don't know how a student student can afford the price of a book anymore Ive I've told publishers that if they continue to raise the price of these books that they are are going to torun torun torun run themselves right out of business You know I hope for tor our our oursa sa sakes es and for the future students of this college that they do get ran out of business or at least change their tactics Although learning is priceless it shouldn't be overpriced |
