Show 23 Million Title III Grant Given to Director of Development Peter Maughan today announced that subject to final confirmation the US U.S. Office of Education as awarded a Title III grant to Salt Lake Community College in the amount of spread over over five years This is probably the most significant and major grant awarded to the College in its year 39 history In making the announcement Maughan recognized the sterling efforts of Grants Coordinator John Latkiewicz who lived Title II for a solid three months working early and late on weekdays and weekends right up to the final submission date In turn Latkiewicz expressed appreciation for the many people who assisted in making the application successful The College was one of more than institutions competing for forthe forthe forthe the grant ending up su successfully in inthe inthe inthe the top 25 percent There are five areas targeted for significant improvement The first is Improving Academic Programs ms and the Acquisition of Equipment Sixteen programs will be restructured using using- a competency based approach a heavy reliance on computer assisted instruction evaluation and class management The outcome will be programs which are responsive to both student and industry needs and which can be flexibly scheduled The second area has to do with Administrative Management As is known at the State Board of Regents' Regents directives installed a software package designed to manage all major functions of the college Presently the college is using only 30 O percent of the software's capabilities Through additional staff on a temporary basis and the acquisition of additional software to cover needs that the current software does not address will use 80 percent of its software capacity The eventual savings in time and cost will amount to over a year Third as a result of understaffing Stud Student nt Services are currently minimal Through the use of peer counseling visual audio-visual presentation presenta presenta- tion of routine the use of automation in hi assessment and career exploration processes the college will increase student satisfaction with services and lower the rate of returning non-returning students Student Services will also develop the capacity to support the competency based approach ach to instruction Fourth the Regents have mandated that offer the Associate of Arts degree and expand humanities offerings in particular In o order der to lay the foundation for sound liberal education programs the College will develop a program and course development model for the development of its liberal education programs will revamp and articulate 20 of its existing courses and develop 40 new courses courses The goal will be to develop s with articulation in mind so that transfer rate is significantly r S i above the national average Finally given the states state's economic plights needs to develop funding through state non state non resources To accomplish this the College will develop incentives es for faculty and staff to participate in the resource development process develop their skills in proposal preparation and identify prospective donors will also develop its capacity to contract to I provide services to business and industry A doubling of state non-state on page 2 S Title III Grant continued financial resources will be expected as a result of this activity John Latkiewicz says first years year's funding will be inthe amount of Subsequent years' years funding is in part dependent on the first years year's performance Recognizing that many people helped in the creation of the winn winning ng proposal Latkiewicz noted t the e follow following ng people made major T contributions to preparation of the grant Edith Mitko LuAnn Poulsen Jerry Fullmer Nick Gavle Norman Larry LarryP P Landward Ann Erickson Pam Gardner Elree Harris Peter Maughan Mark Lye Anderson Sharlene Dahl Amy Tomita Brent Goodfellow Gayle Heckel Judd Morg Morgan n Heber Hunt and Max Lowe John Johh Latkiewicz notes one further wrinkle to the grant is that with Title III eligibility the c college does not have to provide the traditional 20 percent match on College Work Study money thus saving approximately this year |
