Show Council Approves Recreation Policy And Forms Recreation Advisory Board SALT LAKE CITY CORP The City Council took steps Tuesday evening to reevaluate how and by whom recreation services are provided to City residents It has been at least 30 years since an in-depth in look at the recreation services pr provided vided by the City by Salt Lake County and y ot other er entities has been taken The Councils Council's action Tuesday was to approve with Mayor Palmer DePaulis a joint resolution which formally establishes that Salt Lake City will provide recreation services in addition to those provided by Salt Lake County The resolution also calls on the Mayor to negotiate with the County an agreement that definitely outlines which government provides which service The Council also approved an ordinance which creates a member seven seven seven-me ber citizen Recreation Advisory Board to guide the Administrations Administration's and Councils Council's future decisions on recreation services and f facilities The need for the new focus on recreation was brought abo about t by the lack of an overall City Gity recreation tion policy and by an outdated County City agreement that although it appears never to have been signed has served as operating protocol It set forth that the City would provide all recreation facilities and the County would provide de all recreation programming For example the City would build a Softball diamond but the County would coordinate the leagues that played on it As the As-the the County's population mushroomed mushroom the service needs of the burgeoning sout southern ern and western V Valley alley suburbs took precedence over ove those of the City and the City was forced to provide some of pf its own recreation services which in some cases duplicate those provided ded by the County The City also decided to provide certain activities such as races junior golf programs childrens children's Recreation contests and other events not provided by the County The City Parks and Department now generates some in private sponsorships to run rim run these events In short City officials feel it is now time to clear up a murky situation in order to provide City residents with the best and most economical recreation possible The creation of the program City Recreation Advisory Board will this help further goal of establishing guidelines for assessing recreational needs and then recommending priorities The board will ill also monitor any County City City ment and agreements with other agreement agree agree- entities and would The study capital facility needs current Golf If Advisory Board however will stay intact and member the Golf Advisory Board will a of Board BOOM serve as a voting non-voting member of the Recreation Appointments for the Recreation the May Mayor r and City Council Members Advisory will Board be are now being solicited by geographic areas of the City appointed from various |
