Show Is IsA f rr z zA A Professional 1 l Ii f r s. s Ethics E tICS h- h i t r Club Cl U b 4 by fonette Brown Professional ethics in the workplace was was the subject for the Speakers Speaker's Forum held Thursday February 12 in the College Center The monthly lect lecture e featured David Jacobs an auditor Mr Jaco Jacobs s compared the personal ethics An individual develops to the professional ethics encountered in the workplace No matter what position an individual might hold that position requires some degree of integrity Such integrity might range from access to sensitive material to respect of company property It was was' pointed out that as computer programmers ones one's job is to create a program for a company If H one leaves employment at that company the t program is the property of the company not the programmer As an auditor Mr Jacobs helps establish the proper security controls vital to the company's survival He does a preliminary survey of the controls already in place documents the strengths and weaknesses of the system spot checks compliance with control poli policies ies and executes more detailed testing as necessary From this information a plan is developed to improve security Some of the controls implement might be the proper segregation of duties limited access to sensitive areas controls within computer systems and use of backup documentation of information Lastly Mr Jacobs pointed out the benefits employees gain when professional professional professional ethics ar are maintained Through compliance to a code of ethics the employee employ e acquires respect and admiration from his colleagues colleagues' and super supervisors If a profession is regarded as having a high degree of ethics the whole profession benefits |
