Show I The Picture j Counseling Big I t or 7 ii-he ii T The Thin Things No One Ever Tells Tell Yo You by Points West Columnist Jaren faren Green The things no one ever tells you sounds like a movie title If it were were a movie it would be a tragedy of human drama Drama is exactly what I got from a friend when I told him it jt was cheaper faster and smarter to start at and transfer transfer-to to the university later No one ever tells you these things he said Hes He's rig right t especially when it comes to education Educators need to understand that unfortunately most of us would rather someone just tell us what to do In high school teachers often would take time to explain the Big Picture These little speeches about our future plans for education are less frequently heard at Some Soine instructors look only as far faras faras faras as the classroom door Its It's not their fault however Instructors assume that we are adults now True- True but even adults have questions I asked Larry Landward director of academic advising what questions students ask most What do I do next was his reply He went on to explain that the counseling centers center's primary responsibility is to help students with course selection and graduation requirements To fulfill this responsibility counselors spend most of their time helping students understand the college catalog Landward is proud of his catalog interpreters Between the four of them Landward Durrant Black Gene Christensen and Vo Belnap they h have v more that than 70 years of f experience rie ce in counseling at If students know where e they want to to g go but dont don't know how to meet the requirements or get through gh the r red d tape we will draw them a map Landward says He then says they will make a few calls and clear the road so students can reach their destinations Students should be aware that Dick Wade is the new counselor for Business and Industry and that Jeff Hunter is the counselor for Technology and General Education The Assessment Center with Keith Heigert and Neil Wood can help students understand their likes abilities and potentials through testing or the new Discover computer program Make an appointment to see a and GO If you dont don't know what to ask dont don't worry-the worry counselors are trained to lead students into asking the right questions Each week Landward sends out a faculty newsletter which helps instructors know the right answers to common questions Instructors should read these newsletters to keep from giving misinformation to students The newsletters will eventually be compiled into the Academic Advising Handbook Landwards Landward's dream is to teach faculty members to become faculty advisors Similar to room instructors faculty advisors would help counsel students from start to finish Unfortunately Landward says there is little incentive for instructors to help Instructors interested in learning the Big Picture should contact Landward in the counseling center Information is not human It cannot seek us out and present itself to us Instructors are human but they are not perfect they cannot answer questions which are never asked Even God who is perfect said that to receive we must first ask If no one ever tells yu these things it is because no one ever asks |
