Show Letter To The Editor Editor October 29 1984 Dear Editor We the undersigned all have served as student representatives on the Utah State Board of Regents the arm of state government responsible ible for higher education It is the Board of Regents that makes recommendations to the Legislature concerning funding for higher education and of greater importance to students makes recommendations concerning tuition at the states state's universities and colleges Our experience as student regents convinces Us us that university and college students in Utah are well served by having a student on the Board We represented the students' students view and our arguments were heard and times often-times accepted Without a student on the Board the students' students side would simply not be he heard rd In this regard we are deeply troubled that the Republican gubernatorial candidate Norm Bangerter voted against the legislation that cr created a student regent HB 33 1977 If Mr Bangerter opposes student input on the Board that sets tuition how responsive will he be to students' students concerns as Governor r We Weare t are also concerned about what happened at the 1984 session of the Utah legislature A partisan bi-partisan committee committe on edu educational reform which included Mr Bangerter made certain minimum recommendations to the legislature concerning faculty salary increases In an effort to slow the so-called so drain brain the committee proposed an appropriation of million to help make faculty salaries more nearly competitive with other state schools and the private sector Mr Bangerter initially supported the committees committee's recommendation recommendation recommendation but then quickly backed away from that support when the Republican Republic n party caucus took a contrary position As a result less than third one-third of the needed amount was appropriated What that means of course is that some of the best of our university and college professors may leave to take positions in other states and with private businesses We have carefully considered each gubernatorial candidates candidate's record on higher education and have concluded that the logical vote for students is for Wayne Owens Sincerely Cyndi Woodbury Student Regent 1979 80 Bryan Steele Student Regent 81 1980 Rick Southwick Student Regent 1982 83 Mont Wright Student 84 Regent 84 1983 Brad Howell Howell- Student Regent 85 1984 1984 |
